There are so many areas in our lives that could be improved and made easier if we just created new habits in alignment with our goals. All this week we took a look at what you want to change in your life right now, and how to create new habits toward this positive shift.

Through this month's Blog Challenge series, I encouraged you to write down your desired change and shared with you some of the following prompts to figure this out.

  • What is the most urgent health habit to achieve versus something that can wait?

  • What is keeping you up at night? What needs to shift?

  • What can you realistically take on right now? What is something small and achievable?

  • What is something small that would make a big difference in your life right now?

Creating New Habits

Getting into the habit of doing something new is often easier said than done. This is partly because the effort of making change can become uncomfortable. When this happens and your motivation is plummeting, the whole idea of creating new habits can get tossed in the 'too hard basket'. But hold on, wait...

There is an inverse relationship between building new habits and your willpower. When you first want to build a new habit, it takes a lot of willpower to get it done day in and day out. But as you start to establish that new habit, it becomes easier and easier to do until you don’t even have to think about it anymore. Its routine and almost automatic.

What To Remember

While you are in transition from willpower to habit, remember that there many tools you can use to make the process easier. As we talked about this week, you can use a to-do list or set a reminder on your smartphone to help you stay on track. You can look for that accountability partner so you can motivate each other and boost that willpower when it starts to fade.

Weave your new habit into your existing daily routines. Habits will form faster if you stick to a routine such as the same time and environment each day.

Keep the reason why you’re creating the new habit front and centre with a visual reminder, tell your family and friends. Be prepared to weather the uncomfortable moments and push through. Reach out for support to make sure your desired change happens. Yes, it will take some time to make new habits and replace old ones. But it will be well worth it in the end.

Congratulations, beauty!
